Conservatives slam Lib Dems for 30% tax rise as council votes for Lib Dem hikes
Conservative councillors on Melksham Town Council have said they are "horrified" that residents will face an increase of nearly 30% in their council tax to fund the town council's activities largesse which will include an additional £10,000 on a 'fringe festival' and £12,000 on 'marketing'.
An alternative budget proposed by Cllr Phil Alford and seconded by Cllr Tom Price recommended cuts to 'frivolous' spending such as a new fringe festival, Mayoral receptions and a halt on costly recruitment plans. This budget would have seen the precept rise by less than the rate of inflation, at less than 3%.
Cllr Phil Alford, Melksham North said: "This council is continuing to fail residents and squander their money, nobody voted for this and none of the Lib Dems told people that this was their plan. They have failed on the parks, on CCTV, on bus shelters, and the list goes on.
“They must stop behaving recklessly and start acting like professionals whose purpose is to serve residents.
"I've been calling for Dunch Lane play park to be replaced for nearly a year now; we put aside £74,000 this year for park maintenance but have spent less than £500 of it. We have plenty of money but lack the ability to use it. Why are they now demanding £100,000?
"This council needs to do less but do it better."
Cllr Tom Price, Melksham South, added "Councils should not be taking money unnecessarily from residents when so many are struggling.
"We faced accusations that our proposed budget was not 'fun' but a Town Council should, in my view, focus on delivering those essential services well and in the most cost effective way possible.
"At the moment, Melksham Town Council is not getting the basics right which is where their priorities should be.
"When it comes to events and charitable grants, whilst I am aware they create good PR opportunities for the council, residents should be able to make their own choices about donating to charity rather than having it taken from them in ever increasing amounts."
